Bocas Del Toro


The province of Bocas del Toro comprises part of the mainland of Panama, as well as a chain of islands in the Caribbean Sea that basically represents the vibrant Caribbean culture of the country. In Bocas, you will find a relatively undeveloped environment and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. In addition, Bocas is home to a tropical rainforest, some of the area's indigenous peoples, such as the Ngäbe and the Teribes, as well as many of the most popular beaches in the country. There are three main islands in Bocas del Toro: the main one, Isla Colón; Bastimentos, one of the largest islands in Panama; and the small Isla Carenero.

In Bocas Del Toro there is a natural laboratory for the study of evolution and climate change, as well as the first Hope Spot (or “point of hope”) by Mission Blue, a program focused on the rehabilitation and preservation of the marine ecosystem, in Panama.

Bocas del Toro is ideal to spend the day exploring the local nature and then enjoying the nightlife. If you have diving experience, you may be able to take a scientific dive with the Smithsonian. If you are looking for a more accessible marine activity, head to Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, where you can surf, snorkel and dive. Bocas del Toro is home to 95% of the Caribbean's coral species, so get ready to see a wonderful variety of tropical reef creatures including cat sharks, rays, and many species of crabs and lobsters. Moving around the islands and between them is quite simple and inexpensive.

Buses

Isla Colón has a network of small buses that make routes around the island and you can easily go from one end to the other, as well as visit its beaches. They leave from the central park and do not have a specific schedule, since they leave when they are full.

Taxis

It is very easy to take a taxi to get around the island, and its price is cheap, since it usually costs about USD 1 per passenger (short distances).

Watertaxi

This is the fastest way to move between islands, they can cost between USD 3 to USD 5.
